Hydrogen Innovation is Thriving Despite Global Uncertainty

31/03/2025

The global energy transition is at a crossroads. While hydrogen has long been touted as a pillar of the net-zero future, recent scepticism around its scalability and economic viability has cast a shadow over its trajectory. However, while the headlines may be filled with uncertainty, the reality on the ground tells a different story: hydrogen innovation is not just surviving - it’s thriving!

This year’s Hydrogen UK Awards are a testament to that momentum, showcasing the best and brightest in hydrogen technology. The four finalists in the Innovation Project category, Arcadis, GeoPura, HyWaves, and Oort Energy, are not just pushing boundaries; they are redefining what's possible. Here’s how each of them is making an impact:

Arcadis, a global design and consultancy firm, has been instrumental in advancing hydrogen infrastructure. Their work on hydrogen refuelling stations and large-scale feasibility studies has been crucial in laying the groundwork for real-world implementation of hydrogen mobility and industrial applications.

GeoPura is redefining off-grid energy solutions through its hydrogen power units, providing zero-emission electricity to construction sites, events, and temporary installations. By replacing diesel generators with clean hydrogen alternatives, they are showcasing the practical, immediate impact of hydrogen technology.

Innovators, HyWaves is focused on enhancing low-carbon hydrogen production by simplifying electronic design architectures and improving electrolysers. Their technology increases green hydrogen production efficiency by 7% and reduces costs by 19% compared to current solutions.

Bristol’s Oort Energy is focused on high-efficiency electrolysis technology, making green hydrogen production more cost-effective and scalable. Their innovative approach to electrolyser development is key to unlocking the true potential of hydrogen as a sustainable energy carrier.

Each of these companies is a testament to the fact that hydrogen innovation is alive and well, despite the challenges. As an industry, we must recognise that progress is not a straight line. It is driven by visionaries who see beyond the current barriers and continue to push the boundaries of what is possible.

At Commercial Fuel Solutions, in celebration and recognition of this pioneering spirit, we are proud to sponsor the Hydrogen UK Innovation award once again. The path to a hydrogen-powered economy will not be without hurdles, but with companies like these leading the charge, the future of hydrogen is undeniably bright.
